Below is the lists of needed items for bathing.
- Bath tub
- Warm water
- Head to toe wash - I use Johnson&Johnson brand.
- Handkerchief
- Bath towel, preferably big enough to wrap the baby's entire body
- 2 or 3 drops of oil -you may use cooking oil, sesame oil, or even Johnson&Johnson baby oil
Steps for bathing.
- Fill warm water into baby bath tub until it covers your entire hand.
- Remove all the clothes, except for diaper, as you do not want the baby to wee on you before putting her into the bath tub.
- Put some oil on your index finger, and dab it onto baby's nipple and belly button. According to old believe, this is to avoid bath water enters into baby body and cause wind or colic.
- Wet the handkerchief with water, and rub the face gently. This is done twice to clean the face including eye, nose and lips.
- Gently use the handky to rub the ear as well.
- During the rubbing, gently tell the baby the facial part that are being wash, so that she is aware of it and learn.
- After washing the face and ear, use bath towel to gently dab on the face and ear so that it is dry.
- After that, gently tell the baby that you are going to wash her hair. Wet the handky, and rub it onto the baby's head. When the head is wet, put some top to toe wash onto the head, and rub it all around.
- After that, wet the handky again and wash away all the soap residue, until it is clean.
- Dry the head with bath tower.
- Now the entire baby's head is clean. We are ready to bath the baby body now.
- Hold the baby so that the neck is resting on your left or right wrist. This is depands which hand you are comfortable holding the baby. Slowly, put the baby bottom into the bath tub, so that her legs are covered with water.
- If the baby cries when you put her down into the tub, quickly use the handky and dab some warm water on her chest. This is to clam the baby down. Tell the baby that you are holding her tight and will not let her fall. Babies cries because they feel insecure while put into water.
- Quickly, use the wet handky and gently rub her entire body to clean her up. Put some top to toe wash on her entire body, especially on her neck to clean her up. After that, use the handky to wash away all the soap on her.
- After washing off the entire body, quickly hold the baby up from the tub, and wrap her with bath towel so that baby does not catch cold.
- Now, the baby finish taking bath. I will update later some tips for post bathing technique.
Tips:
- During the bath process, ensure that the mother communicate with the baby.
- Tell the baby each step you are going to take like you are going to wash her eyes, nose, and ear.
- If the baby cry during bathing, gently pat on her chest to calm her down.
- Do not bath the baby immediately after feeding, as the baby would vomit the milk.
- Try to bath the baby around 20 minutes after baby wakes up in the morning, before her morning feed.
